The source image for the hive is of the porch from an abandoned house in Northern Virginia.  Abandoned buildings are fascinating, because without maintenance nature, encroaches and reclaims what once belonged to it.  In this case, the mirroring effect created lots of little insects and other entities, which are actively working to build a home in the abandoned space left by people who, no longer assert their mastery over nature.
